Here you can find information about Norrsken Mind’s application process, including the type of projects we fund, who is eligible to apply, and how funding is disbursed.

We accept and review applications continuously. Research grant applications will also be evaluated by our network of Scientific Advisors.

Which projects can apply for funding?

Norrsken Mind funds high-impact projects with potential to advance the field of psychedelic science in Europe. Applications for funding must be related to psychedelic science and address at least one of our three focus areas: research, education and implementation.

In general, we prioritize research that aims to improve the understanding of psychedelic-assisted treatments. We are also interested in projects that lay the foundation for future integration of psychedelic-assisted treatments in healthcare systems. This includes efforts such as educating and engaging mental health stakeholders and decision makers, establishing treatment guidelines, or promoting cross-disciplinary collaboration.

We do not prioritize research involving animal studies.

Who can apply for a grant?

Researchers, non-profit organizations and private individuals are eligible to apply for project funding from Norrsken Mind. We do not grant funding to companies.

Applicants must reside in Europe.

As a general rule, research projects must be affiliated with European universities and the main applicant should have two years of well-documented research activity after the doctoral degree. Doctoral students who seek funding should be part of research projects with a more senior researcher as the main or co-applicant.

What expenses are covered by a grant?

All costs directly related to the project can be included in the grant application, including personnel costs and and other expenses.

As a general rule, indirect costs (so-called overhead) are granted with a maximum of 20%.

The foundation does not have any limits on the amount you can apply funding for. We are open to co-funding projects. However, any funds already received or solicited for a project must be declared when submitting an application.

Please note, international applicants must include currency conversion rates and present their budget in SEK.

How do I apply for a grant?

Norrsken Mind accepts and reviews applications continuously.

Applications are submitted via our web-based application system and we have two grant application forms. Use the form relevant for your project and funding needs:

Research Grants are suitable for researchers affiliated with a European university who are seeking funding for a project. Note, if you are applying for a research grant of 100 000 SEK or less, you can use the Project Grants form.

Project Grants are suitable for non-profit organizations and private individuals seeking funding for a project in any of our three focus areas.

When will I receive a decision?

Normally, you will be notified within one month of submitting your application if your project has passed initial review and is considered for funding.

Decision on whether the project has been approved or rejected funding is normally communicated within 5-6 months from submission.

How and when is funding disbursed?

Once your application has been approved for funding, you will receive instructions on how to request the funds.

Normally, funding is disbursed according to the needs of the project as stated in the application budget.

Requisition of the first payment must be done within eight months of grant approval. Exceptions can be made if unforeseeable external delays are reported in a timely manner prior to the end date.

As a general rule, research grants should be managed by an administering organization (e.g. by the affiliated university) and project grants can be paid out to non-profit organizations or private individuals.

How should I handle changes in my project after funding approval?

Any major changes during the project period must be approved by the foundation in advance.

Good things to know before applying for funding

As a general rule, funded projects shall have a predetermined time limitation. The duration of the project should generally not exceed four years.

Research grant applications are evaluated by our network of Scientific Advisors. When the evaluation process is completed the foundation's board reviews the application. The board convenes quarterly.

Any necessary legal permits required to carry out the project must be obtained before requesting approved funds, unless otherwise specified in the grant approval decision.

For research grants, adherence to open science principles are required, meaning that the results should be freely available to all at the time of publication through open access.

After a funded project is completed, applicants must submit both a scientific and financial report in accordance with Norrsken Mind's guidelines.

Applicants are responsible for repaying funds not used within the project.

The foundation does not provide justification for its funding decisions.
